Prawn here with some tips for setting up your monitor to make sure you’re getting the most out of it and things to avoid.

If you’re new to PC gaming it can be easy to make some simple mistakes when setting up your monitor. One of those is just setting up your monitor by plugging it into the motherboard rather than the graphics card. This might work, but you won’t get the best performance out of your monitor. So if you’re using an HDMI cable make sure you connect it to your GPU for maximum performance.

Some monitors will also only give you the maximum performance options if you’re using a certain cable. For example the Philips Monitor I reviewed has a max refresh rate of 175Hz. But if you use a HDMI cable you can only get a maximum of 100Hz. That’s just the way it is designed, so if you want to set the maximum refresh rate you first need to use a Display Port cable. If you’re not sure then it’s worth checking the specs of the monitor or the relevant user guide as these will often tell you what to do.

In Windows you’ll also want to set the refresh rate of your display as well. There’s no point in spending all that lovely cash on a fancy monitor and graphics card if you then run you monitor at 60Hz (which it will probably default to if you don’t change the settings).

So do this:
Right click on your desktop and click display settings
Click on the relevant monitor and scroll down to advanced settings
Click on the refresh rate drop down and choose the highest refresh rate you can

You can also do this with Nvidia control panel if you have an Nvidia graphics card. Right click on the desktop and click Nvidia Control Panel (on Windows 11 click /”show more options/” first if you don’t see control panel. Then click on the setting to /”change resolution/” and choose the refresh rate there.
I’d also recommend going into Manage 3D settings and turning on Low Latency mode. Especially if you’re playing FPS games.
