About this video: You’ve seen VPN ads absolutely everywhere on YouTube. At one point, it seemed like just about every YouTuber out there had some kind of VPN sponsorship. However, what do VPNs really do?

Well, it’s a bit more nuanced than simply, “They protect you from threats online.” You see VPNs add to your online protections by sitting in between you and the websites you visit. It also gives you more privacy against your ISP as, because all you are doing is connecting to the VPN, they don’t get to see the website you visit. Just the VPN does.

For those of you who are internet privacy nerds like me, though, you probably just realized that, while we may be hiding from our ISP, the VPN company is getting all of our data. They can see where everyone is going online who uses their service.

Now, most popular VPN companies today don’t do anything with this, and most actually try all that they can to get rid of this data as fast as possible. Not only does this protect you the consumer it also protects them.

Free VPNs, though, can be a bit less trustworthy. That is why I don’t recommend using any VPN paid or free unless they tell you exactly how your data is being stored. It is impossible for a VPN to work without knowing where you are going online.

With that being said, hiding your browsing history from your ISP isn’t the only thing a VPN is good for. You can also use public networks more safely. This is because, just like your ISP, on a public network, all you are doing is connecting to the VPN. Anyone on the network can’t see anything you are doing past connecting to the VPN keeping you more safe.

VPNs also allow you to browse the web more anonymously. Your IP address is your identifier online. With that, it can be traced back to you. The most basic way to hide your IP address online is using a VPN.

When you use a VPN, your IP address is only known by your ISP and the VPN. The websites you visit just see the VPN’s IP address not yours.

Just like with browsing history, you need to make sure that your VPN provider gets rid of your IP information as quickly as possible as they could technically link up your IP address to where you have visited through their servers.

Luckily, VPNs that don’t log where you have been usually don’t log your IP address either. Meaning it is nearly impossible to connect where you have been when using the VPN as there is no proof you ever connected to it or what the server you accessed.

What about Netflix, though? You can’t mention VPNs without mentioning Netflix and other streaming services that change and block content depending on where you are located.

Using a VPN, you can change where your IP address is located and thus connect to a service like Netflix as if you are in another country.

VPNs make this super easy, and good VPNs actively try to keep Netflix from blocking their IPs allowing people to enjoy content from anywhere in the world with ease.

Overall, VPNs are also a great addition to your online privacy suite.

What VPNs aren’t, though, is the all-in-one solution for online privacy that many of them claim to be.

So do you need a VPN? Yes and no. If you are on public wifi networks frequently, a VPN is a must. However, if you never travel, you’re only using trusted networks, and you don’t care about internet privacy, it’s not something you really need to worry about.
