He does not know what happened but to me it looks like an update screwed his computer up. You can do several things from here such a restoring to a previous saved restore point, reset PC with clean install of Windows while saving all your data (videos, photos, documents, etc), Safe Mode, command prompt, Uniinstall lastest or newest update, etc all through the advanced options menu.
My first choice was to uninstall lastest update and it worked. If it did not work I would start to move to other troubleshooting options within the advanced options menu.
Remember if you cannot even log in, make sure you stay on the login screen and hold down the shift key while clicking restart on the power button on the bottom right hand side of the login screen to get to the advanced options menu.
