Katniss Everdeen is a hero in the sense that she risked her own life for her family, friends, and district. Heroism has existed since the beginning of storytelling. Heroes stand up for the weak and innocent, and clash with wickedness.
Katniss Everdeen is a force of nature. If we’re using the gender-neutral definition of “hero”, then she is the one and only hero of The Hunger Games both on page and on screen.
Yet in addition to his strength, Peeta turns out to have talent in painting and camouflage. He is also loyal and crafty. Peeta falls in love with Katniss, and helps her win the Hunger Games even when he is injured. He is a hero because he would do anything for her, and he thinks nothing of himself.
She’s Selfless. The entire story is based on Katniss’ initial sacrificial act, volunteering in her little sister Prim’s place to compete in the Hunger Games. In poverty-ridden District 12, the word ‘Tribute’ was synonymous with ‘corpse,’ meaning Katniss offered up the greatest gift possible: her life.
He is 19 in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. At 14 years old, he meets Katniss, who also lost her father in the same mine explosion. They cross each other’s paths while hunting in the woods outside of District 12.
She sought revenge. Gale devised the double-bombing strategy used against the Capitol, but he didn’t plant the devices or give the orders for their detonation. That is, he played a role, but it would be unfair to say that Gale killed Prim.
When questioned about the bombs (if they were his or not), Gale replies “I don’t know.” Katniss feels he is lying, and dismisses him with “Goodbye Gale.” She can no longer trust him and the person he has become by killing so many innocent civilians.
When a group of medics go to help the children, Katniss notices a nurse with an untucked shirt at the back. She screams her sister’s name just as a second hovercrafts sends another wave of bombs over the area, killing both Prim and the other medics.
In Catching Fire, Peeta lied about Katniss being pregnant to try to protect her from the Games. Katniss said that she miscarried due to an electric shock in the arena. However, during the 15 years after the events of Mockingjay, Katniss became pregnant legitimately.
In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2, he’s reunited with his boo, Annie and they get married. Soon after, he joins Katniss’s mission to go kill President Snow. All of this doesn’t end well for Finnick, though. Finnick dies during a mutt attack underground, but there’s something very heroic about his death on screen.
Why did Katniss try to kill herself? She didn’t want to die because she was trying to avoid arrest. She genuinely didn’t see any point to living. All she would ever be was a pawn to whoever was in power.
Peeta, however, is genuinely in love with her, as is revealed on their train ride home, when Katniss admits that she has been partially faking her feelings for him, leaving him heartbroken and cold towards her.
