In Part One of the novel, Clarisse rubs Montag’s chin with a dandelion and mentions that he is not in love, because the dandelion particles do not rub off. Montag initially protests Clarisse’s declaration and insists that he is in love with Mildred.

In Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451.” the second time Montag meets Clarisse she is holding something in her hand. He inquires as to what she is holding and she replies that it is a dandelion. She proceeds to rub under her chin with the dandelion and asks Montag if it is yellow. If it is she is in love.

Clarisse and Montag befriend each other quickly, and Clarisse’s impact on Montag is enormous. Clarisse comes into Montag’s life, and immediately begins to question his relationship with his wife, his career, and his happiness. Also, Clarisse shows Montag how to appreciate the simple things in life.

In Fahrenheit 451, Montag is not in love with Clarisse in a conventionally romantic sense, but he does seem to love her free spirit and her unusual way of looking at the world.

What does Clarisse’s dandelion reveal about Montag’s relationship with his wife? When Clarisse puts the dandelion under Montag’s chin it doesn’t turn yellow so it showed that he wasn’t in love with anyone including her.

Clarisse disappears from the novel fairly early, after she is killed by a speeding car.

Montag finds Mildred passed out, having overdosed on thirty plus sleeping pills. Her stomach is pumped and her blood re-circulated. In the novel, Mildred does not die as we read.

Montag is initially shocked and in disbelief at hearing the news of Clarisse’s death, while Mildred seems like she could care less. Mildred then rolls over, and Montag remains silent in his bed as he reflects on the death of his friend.

What happens to Clarisse? A few weeks after Montag meets Clarisse, she disappears. Mildred later tells Montag that Clarisse was run over and killed by a car and that her family moved away. Clarisse’s death could have been an accident by the joyriding teenagers Clarisse admitted she was scared of.

Also Know, does Mildred die? In the novel, Mildred does not die as we read. She leaves in a taxi to go somewhere, with one suitcase Montag—in his mind’s eye—imagines her in her hotel room.

In Fahrenheit 451, Clarisse dies, but Bradbury does not describe this event in the text. Mildred informs the reader of Clarisse’s death. When Montag asks why she did not tell him sooner, Mildred says she “forgot.” Clarisse’s cause of death is confirmed in Part Three.

The theme is used effectively and often throughout the novel. Montag is often very fearful of his situation and the people around him. His boos, a mechanical hound and the constant fear of being caught all equate to the ongoing theme of fear.

First, Montag compares Clarisse’s face to a mirror. Next he says that Clarisse is like the “eager watcher of a marionette show, anticipating each flicker of an eyelid, gesture of his hand, each flick of a finger, the moment before it began” (Bradbury 11).

Clarisse is considered anti-social because she refuses to participate in the activates that the government deems as acceptable activities for people in the society of “Fahrenheit 451”.

When Montag thinks that Mildred overdosed on pills, he realizes he would not cry if she were to die because he feels no connection to her. Montag has begun to realize that his entire society is empty. His people are lost. He does not even feel a connection with his own wife.
