Stargirl is self-confident. For much of the novel, she simply doesn’t care what other people think. She cheers for both teams at sporting events, sings “Happy Birthday” to strangers, is friends with just about anybody and everybody, and is self assured enough to dress the way that she wants.

Leo is caught between the two. He is fascinated by Stargirl’s unusual behavior, and eventually gets close to her and enters into her world. He also feels the pull to be normal, and he tries to help Stargirl understand that. Leo is more self-aware than either Stargirl or his high school peers.
