Soon after the Big Bang the universe was very hot. As it cooled down the elementary particles started to form. It is thought that it took over 300,000 years for the first atoms to form when protons and electrons had low enough energies to combine to form hydrogen.

13.7 billion years ago

It takes us from a hot, plasma-filled Universe to an almost-equally-hot Universe filled with 100% neutral atoms. Although we say that the Universe formed these atoms 380,000 years after the Big Bang, this was actually a slow, gradual process that took about 100,000 years on either side of that figure to complete.

The first “atoms” in the universe were not atoms at all—they were just nuclei that had not found electrons yet. Of these three, helium was the first to begin forming “real” atoms. An atom is more than a nucleus—it must also possess electrons. Helium nuclei were the first to gather a full purse of electrons en masse.

The initial singularity is a singularity predicted by some models of the Big Bang theory to have existed before the Big Bang and thought to have contained all the energy and spacetime of the Universe.

The earliest cosmological models of the universe were developed by ancient Greek and Indian philosophers and were geocentric, placing Earth at the center. Over the centuries, more precise astronomical observations led Nicolaus Copernicus to develop the heliocentric model with the Sun at the center of the Solar System.

One significant outcome of the recent ice age was the development of Homo sapiens. Humans adapted to the harsh climate by developing such tools as the bone needle to sew warm clothing, and used the land bridges to spread to new regions.

In November 2015, Administrator Bolden of NASA reaffirmed the goal of sending humans to Mars. He laid out 2030 as the date of a crewed surface landing on Mars, and noted that planned 2020 Mars rover would support the human mission.
