But as there were thousands of Bakers, and hundreds of Henry Bakers in this city, it was impossible to find the rightful owner of the hat and the goose. James Ryder was an attendant at the Hotel Cosmopolitan in London. However, because Holmes judged Ryder was unlikely to become a career criminal, and because it was Christmas, Holmes let Ryder go free.

Watson as they hunt down the people involved in stealing a blue carbuncle, or gem, that was discovered in a goose gullet. As it turns out, James Ryder framed another man for stealing the gem, while he himself stuffed the gem into a goose but ended up losing it.

Holmes and Watson invite Ryder back to Baker Street, telling Ryder that they know he is looking for a goose with a black bar on its tail. Unfortunately, Ryder dropped his goose and then confused it with another, taking away the wrong bird. By the time he realised his mistake, the other geese had already been sold.

A plumber with a previous robbery conviction named John Horner has been arrested on evidence from James Ryder, head attendant. Ryder had found the bureau forced open and jewel case lying empty after Horner did repair work in the room. The Countess’ maid gave collaborating evidence.

Why did Ryder’s attempt to hide the blue carbuncle in a goose go wrong? Somebody he didn’t know bought the goose. The goose’s stomach acid dissolved the carbuncle.

He is the “Head Attendant” at the hotel where the Countess was staying and where the jewel was stolen. He admits to Holmes all that he did and explains it to him in detail. Holmes decides to let him go.

After Holmes turns down the imperious Lady Morcar’s demand that he help her locate a stolen priceless blue carbuncle, the gem turns up in a Christmas goose. A blue carbuncle, a valuable jewel, is stolen from Lady Morcar, and an innocent workman charged and remanded in the run-up to Christmas.

And he does, as we see his reunion with his family on Christmas morning!! But remember–in this version, Holmes has not returned the carbuncle!! He brought the problem to Holmes’ initially, and immediately brought the lovely gem to him, as well.
