Uhtred’s dynasty continued to reign in Bernicia through Ealdred, Earl of Bamburgh (killed 1038) his son from his marriage to Ecgfrida, and Eadulf (killed 1041) his son from his marriage to Sige, and briefly Eadulf’s son Osulf held the earldom of northern Northumbria 1067 until he too was killed.

They had a son, named Uhtred after his father, but the child died young after choking on a pebble. The elder Uhtred believes the death is supernaturally connected to the survival of Alfred’s son Edward, who was healed by Iseult at the same time that the younger Uhtred choked.

Uhtred’s change of allegiance to the Anglo-Saxons, Brida’s hatred of Christians, and the loss of Ragnar caused Brida to become a bitter and cruel warrior who delighted in the slaughter of her foes, both warriors and civilians, and she was ultimately killed by Uhtred’s daughter Stiorra at the great hall of York in 917.

So Uhtred on the show is fictional, but he’s definitely at least loosely based on a historical figure. It could also be that the author was paying homage to his father through his fictional protagonist in both the books and the series. Whoever he is really based on, Dreymon has fun playing him.

“Cnut’s forces were too strong for Uhtred to fight, and so Uhtred did homage to him as King of England. “Uhtred was summoned to a meeting with Cnut, and on the way there, he and 40 of his men were murdered by Thurbrand the Hold, with assistance from Uhtred’s own servant, Wighill and with the connivance of Cnut.”

Unlike many of the historical characters in the novels, Uhtred was largely fictional, so his end was always open-ended. The hero may usually survive his own saga, but I was never sure how things would turn out for Uhtred until very late in the novel.

Sword Song covers 2 years, 885-887. The story began in 866, with a 9 year old Uhtred (12 years old in the TV show) which means Uhtred is 30 years old by the books reckoning and 33 according to the show, at the conclusion of season two.

Æthelred

But at the height of her success, tragedy struck. Aethelflaed fell ill. She was taken to Tamworth, where she died on 12 June 918 probably aged 47 or 48. She was buried in a church she had ordered to be built, St Oswald’s, in Gloucester.

In season 4, Aethelflaed has a new love interest It’s asituation that was shocking for some fans and satisfying for others. He abdicates in favor of Aethelflaed and she makes apromise to “remain chaste” while she is the Lady of Mercia.

What happened to the Anglo-Saxons in 1066? During the 11th century, Anglo-Saxon England was conquered not once but twice. The Danish king, Cnut, ousted the native Anglo-Saxon dynasty in 1016, and he and his sons reigned in England until 1042.

Both were Germanic groups who engaged in acts of piracy and conquest in the North-Sea in the Iron Age. The main difference was that the Saxons: Came from the area south of Denmark, while the Vikings came from Denmark, Sweden and Norway (Jutes and Angles, allies of the Saxons came from Denmark though)
