If the axis was not tilted, our year-round climate would be rather boring and many places on earth wouldn’t receive much light! During our summer, the Northern Hemisphere leans toward the sun in its revolution, there are more daylight hours, and the sun’s angle is more perpendicular to us than at other times of year.

Because of the rotation of the earth, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so the further east you go, the earlier the sun rises. So in one sense, the sun always rises earlier in Georgia than it does in California.

Arizona

The absolute least sunny county in the lower U.S. is Island County, Wash. On an average day, it gets only about 60 percent of the solar radiation of a typical county in Southern California. The states bordering the Great Lakes — from Minnesota to New York — are all at the bottom of the sunlight distribution.

The desert cities of Las Vegas and Phoenix top the list of major American cities with the lowest humidity. Las Vegas clearly ranks as the driest, with an average relative humidity level of just 30 percent. Phoenix joins in as the only other big city that averages less than 40 percent humidity.

A humidity level no higher than 50% is optimal as a general rule of thumb, but the best level depends on the temperature outside. When the humidity is too high, you can have problems with mold and allergies. When the humidity is too low, you can experience dry skin and annoying static electricity.

Any area with high humidity is susceptible to black mold problems. A relative humidity greater than 55 percent is enough to support the growth of black mold. Black mold thrives on moisture. Household problems such as water and pipe leaks cause water intrusion and an environment perfect for black mold to grow.

Best Humidity for Sleeping According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the best indoor relative humidity falls between 30% and 50%, and it should never exceed 60%. Other studies suggest 40% to 60% is a better range.

Lesson 3 – Humidity Sometimes, humidity or dampness (water vapor) in the air can supply enough moisture for mold growth. Most yeasts and molds are heat-sensitive and destroyed by heat treatments at temperatures of 140-160°F (60-71°C). Some molds make heat-resistant spores, however, and can survive heat treatments in pickled vegetable products. These molds, however, require oxygen to grow.
