Historically, there are four named oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic. However, most countries – including the United States – now recognize the Southern (Antarctic) as the fifth ocean. The Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian are the most commonly known.

There are 228,450 known species in the ocean — and as many as 2 million more that remain a total mystery.

There are four ocean zones: the Sunlight zone, the Twilight zone, the Midnight zone, and the Abyssal zone.

Like ponds and lakes, the ocean regions are separated into separate zones: intertidal, pelagic, abyssal, and benthic. All four zones have a great diversity of species.

It is sometimes referred to as the midnight zone or the dark zone. This zone extends from 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) down to 4,000 meters (13,124 feet). Here the only visible light is that produced by the creatures themselves. The water pressure at this depth is immense, reaching 5,850 pounds per square inch.

Human bone crushes at about 11159 kg per square inch. This means we’d have to dive to about 35.5 km depth before bone crushes. This is three times as deep as the deepest point in our ocean.

What’s more, at more than 200 meters below the surface of the ocean, the weight of the water above creates such enormous pressure, that it can be 1,000 times that at the surface. But even in such an inhospitable environment, life still finds a way. However, it’s not entirely pitch black in the deep ocean.

American undersea explorer Victor Vescovo has become the first person to dive to the deepest points of the earth’s five oceans, and he’s now back on dry land to reveal his discoveries. Meanwhile, his excursion to the bottom of the Molloy Trench marked the first manned dive to reach to the bottom of the abyss.

The maximum depth reached by anyone in a single breath is 702 feet (213.9 metres) and this record was set in 2007 by Herbert Nitsch. He also holds the record for the deepest dive without oxygen – reaching a depth of 831 feet (253.2 metres) but he sustained a brain injury as he was ascending.

After several trips back to the drawing board, it turns out that raising the Titanic would be about as futile as rearranging the deck chairs on the doomed vessel. After a century on the ocean floor, Titanic is apparently in such bad shape it couldn’t withstand such an endeavor for a variety of reasons.

We were taken around by ‘the unsinkable Molly Brown’ who led us through recreations of some of the rooms/ cabins as well as the bridge and promenade deck. At the end there is a large section of the hull and there is also a piece that you are allowed to touch.

The world’s most famous shipwreck may be the RMS Titanic, but the remains of the luxury steamship are visible only to people in deep-sea submersibles and those watching feeds from remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). But countless other shipwrecks are much more accessible, so long as you have Google Earth.
