The 2B pencil has a higher blackness, and the marks drawn are relatively black, while the HB pencil has a lower blackness, and the color of the marks drawn is relatively light, which is very different. The usage of 2B pencil and HB pencil is also quite different. 2B pencil is darker in color and lower in hardness.

In the term ‘HB’, H stands for ‘hard’ which is designated for hard leads, and B stands for ‘black’ which is designated for softer leads. It is a universal term printed on all pencils….

HB GRAPHITE SCALE The letter “F” is also used to indicate that the pencil sharpens to a fine point. Today, however, most pencils using the HB system are designated by a number such as 2B, 4B or 2H to indicate the degree of hardness. For example, a 4B would be softer than a 2B and a 3H harder than an H.

Anyone with more experience in writing and drawing will usually choose a pencil with the medium degree of hardness HB; some feel most comfortable with the degree of hardness F. People who want to express themselves artistically use soft pencils of hardness grades 2B to 8B.

“B” pencils feature softer graphite. (The “B” stands for “black”.) Softer pencils make darker marks since more of the material is released. Therefore, a “4H” pencil will produce lighter marks than an “2H” pencil while a “4B” pencil will make darker marks than a “2B” pencil.

The 7B is the softest and darkest of the common pencils (8B and 9XXB pencils are even softer and darker).

B9 is the softest and darkest. 9H is the lightest and hardest graphite pencil. So a B6 is softer and darker than a B2. An 6H is harder and lighter than a 2H and much harder and lighter than a HB or a B pencil.

Pencil makers manufacture No. 1, 2, 2.5, 3, and 4 pencils—and sometimes other intermediate numbers. The higher the number, the harder the core and lighter the markings. Although the method may be agreed upon, the way various companies categorize and label pencils isn’t.

The H pencil range: The 9H pencil is the hardest and H pencil is the softest. The B pencil range: The 9B pencil is the softest, and the B pencil is the hardest.

The H stands for hard and the B stands for blackness. H pencils are harder and produce lighter lines because they contain more filler and less graphite. Pencils that fall into the B grade, on the other hand, make a darker mark because they’re softer and don’t contain as much filler.

Numbers are then used to indicate the degree of softness – the higher the number the softer the lead and the blacker the mark. For example, a 2B lead is softer than a B lead and will produce a blacker mark. A 4B lead is softer than a 2B etc.

2B is harder than 4B and 4B is harder than 6B. However, these are all on the soft side (B). The following is the standard scale. Hardest is on the left, softest on the right: 10H,9H,8H,7H,6H,5H,4H,3H,2H,H,F,HB,B,2B,3B,4B,5B,6B,7B,8B,8B,10B.

While the softer B pencils are generally considered the best for shading, there’s no reason to discount the harder H pencils. The HB and H are good choices for fine, light, even shading. “B” or “2B” pencils as well according to the same FAQ. Generally, a #2 pencil is about the equivalent of an HB pencil. According to this system, pencils are graded on a continuum for “H” (hardness) and “B” (blackness), with a number to say how hard or how black it is.

The #2 refers to hardness of the lead, so it depends on the lead you use in the pencil – if you buy HB leads – whether 0.5 mm or 0.07 mm or 0.09 mm – that is equivalent to #2; there are other designations such as B or H which are different. Yes, it’s equivalent to a #2 pencil.

What is a #2 HB pencil? A #2 pencil is considered an HB pencil which is the middle of the scale of pencil hardness. These pencils produce a dark line that is still easily erasable which is why they are commonly used.
