IPads run Apple’s iOS, a mobile operating system designed for smartphones and tablets. Standard laptop operating systems, such as Windows or OS X, are much more flexible and customizable: they can run more programs at once, handle more complex applications and give the user greater access to the file storage system.

While an iPad isn’t a direct replacement for a MacBook—and doesn’t have the integrated PC powers of, say, a Surface tablet—it can do pretty much everything most people do on a laptop. You just might need some new accessories and productivity apps.

Luckily it is possible to sign up for free, you just need to create a Microsoft ID by logging on with your email address and password. You don’t need to have an Office 365 subscription, but you will need to register for this free account if you want to be able to create and edit documents.

Microsoft’s Office app with Word, Excel and PowerPoint functionality combined is available for free for iPad users in the Apple App Store. On an iPad 10.1-inch (or larger), a subscription is required to create and edit documents, as is outlined in the App Store description.

Microsoft Office Is Now Free for iPhones, iPads and Android Office users will now be able to create and edit documents in Word, Excel and PowerPoint on iPhone, iPad and Android devices at no cost. Making full use of the apps previously required a subscription to Office 365, which starts at $70 per year.

How to download Microsoft Word on your iPad

1. Open the App Store on your iPad.
2. Tap on the “Search” option at the bottom-right hand corner of the app.
3. Type “Microsoft Word” or “Word” in the search bar at the top.
4. Tap “Get” next to Microsoft Word.
5. You can also tap on the Microsoft Word app to view more details.
