INDOOR SHOT PUT THROWING CAGE Compliant with IAAF rule n°221This indoor throwing cage model is used for many National, International championships and Meetings. This structure is required to stop a shot, whether in flight or bouncing therefore ensuring the safety of spectators, officials and athletes.

Holding the shot put The shot is held at the base of the fingers, not the palm. The fingers are slightly spread apart with the thumb for support. The hand will be bent back in the cocked position when holding the shot. It looks like you are carrying a pizza.

Foul Throw An attempt is considered a foul if the athlete touches the top or outside of the rim during the throw. If the discus lands on or outside of the sector lines the throw is determined to be foul. The athlete should not leave the circle until the discus has touched the ground or the attempt will be foul.

To initiate the throw they kick to the front with the left leg, while pushing off forcefully with the right. As the thrower crosses the circle, the hips twist toward the front, the left arm is swung out then pulled back tight, followed by the shoulders, and they then strike in a putting motion with their right arm.

The top AA girls this year are throwing 42′, but mid 30’s are much more common. Going over 100′ in the discus will place in most invites.
