Ziggurat. A Ziggurat is a large structure in the middle of the Mesopotamia city. Why did they build the ziggurat. They build them for the most important people the gods.

Each ziggurat was part of a temple complex which included other buildings. The purpose of the ziggurats was religious in a sense that the Sumerians believed that building the ziggurat the way they did made them closer to the heavens. And priests made offerings of agriculture and animals.

Temples, known as ziggurats, were often built in the cities to honor and house each city’s god. – They believed the gods created the rules (laws) for Sumerian society. All people were expected to obey the laws. – Sumerians believed that the gods created human beings from clay for one purpose- to make their gods happy.

Why were priests so important and powerful in Sumerian society? They were in charge of religious duties, non-religious duties, and gods. Religious duties: They performed rituals and followed religious rules, they worked to satisfy the gods, and they made offerings to the gods.

The ziggurat itself is the base on which the White Temple is set. Its purpose is to get the temple closer to the heavens, and provide access from the ground to it via steps. The Mesopotamians believed that these pyramid temples connected heaven and earth.
