Calais eventually fell to the French in January 1558, in the reign of Mary I. Calais was formally lost in the reign of Elizabeth I under the Treaty of Troyes.

Calais came under English control after Edward III of England captured the city in 1347, followed by a treaty in 1360 that formally assigned Calais to English rule….Calais.

The most logical place in Europe for the D-Day invasion was France’s Pas de Calais region, 150 miles northeast of Normandy and the closest point to Great Britain across the English Channel.

Inhabited since prehistoric times, the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region has always been a strategic (and hence one of the most fought-over) region in Europe. French President Charles de Gaulle, who was born in Lille, called the region a “fatal avenue” through which invading armies repeatedly passed.

But Calais has a lot more to offer than its huge warehouses of alcohol and cigarettes and the historic town is well worth a day trip or even a longer stay. And unlike in Paris, visitor information across the city is all in English as well as French.

Famous for its spectacular chalk cliffs, the White Cliffs, Dover is one of Britain’s principal cross-channel ports, and despite the opening of the Channel Tunnel to Calais, many visitors to the country still choose to arrive by ferry for the magnificent views of Kent’s lovely coastline.

The name Dover originally meant “the waters” or “the stream.”

Well it’s an impressive castle, and is the only thing in Dover worth seeing. If your tour to Dover doesn’t involve anything more exciting than a look at the cliffs, then I wouldn’t bother going and spend the time in London instead.

People are now able to have a dip in the sea in Dover again after the Port removed the swimming restrictions in the area. The ban in an area along Dover’s seafront has been lifted in time for the start of Channel swimming training and the summer’s warm temperatures.
