Children who sold newspapers on the streets were called “newsies”. The New York newsies went up against two newspaper publishers, Joseph Pulitzer of The World and William Randolph Hearst of The Journal, to fight for fair wages.

Crutchy Morris is a Manhattan newsboy. His real name is Charles Morris Albert.

Newsies, which began life as a Disney movie before morphing into a brand-new stage musical at Paper Mill Playhouse, was inspired by a real-life event: the strike of newsboys against Joseph Pulitzer and other publishers who tried to take more than their fair share of the young workers’ earnings.

If an extraordinary event happened after a publication’s morning deadline, many newspapers would print a second edition in order to deliver the news, i.e. an “extra.” And to bring attention to the breaking news, newsies would go out of their way to push these secondary editions, shouting, “Extra! Extra!”

Newsies is based on the Newsboys Strike of 1899. Everything that happened in the strike is included in the movie and the musical. Finally, in the movie and musical, Theodore Roosevelt helped Jack and the Newsies with the strike against Pulitzer and Hearst.

The Newsboys Strike of 1899 began on July 20 in New York City. The “newsies” who hocked newspapers for the New York Journal and the New York World went on strike, demanding that the wholesale price increase, from 50 cents per one hundreds newspapers to 60 cents per one hundred newspapers, be rolled back.

They were alive until Jack was at least 15 years old. So the sweatshop workers are on strike, the Newsies get the paper’s costs to go back down, and Jack reunites with Sarah and David, and all ends happily ever after as they go dancing into the sunset (metaphorically). …

Jack soon teaches Les and Jacobs some interesting lessons about how to sell papers (such as sensationalizing headlines). Shortly afterwards, the boys are challenged when the ‘World’ newspaper’s owner, Joseph Pulitzer (Robert Duvall), raises their purchase rate by 1/10 of a cent.

Newsies (released as The News Boys in the United Kingdom) is a 1992 American musical historical drama film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by choreographer Kenny Ortega in his film directing debut.

Even though in the original movie there was a female character, she was not a newsie. In the original Broadway production, they dressed the female ensemble as boy newsies. Some immigrant families only had girls and, like boys in the other families, they had to help bring income to the house.

Katherine Pulitzer

Lindsay originated the role of Katherine Plumber in Newsies, a Disney musical written for the stage by Harvey Fierstein, in 2011. The character is the fictional love interest of protagonist Jack Kelly, but Lindsay said she drew inspiration for her portrayal from the real-life investigative journalist, Nellie Bly.
