Kools are a brand of cigarette. They were favored by Dallas Winston. He stole two packs from a corner store before taking Ponyboy and Johnny to the nightly double.

What do they do for fun? The Socs and Greasers hang out at movie theaters and football fields. They beat each other up, drink and smoke, and are rude to girls.

Sodapop confides in Ponyboy and sticks up for him when Darry lectures him. He is the only person who can tease Darry and get away with it.

It was ranked #38 on the American Library Association’s Top 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990–1999. This book has been banned from some schools and libraries because of the portrayal of gang violence, underage smoking and drinking, strong language/slang, and family dysfunction.

Two-Bit’s switchblade is his most prized possession and, in several ways, represents the disregard for authority for which greasers traditionally pride themselves. First of all, the blade is stolen. Second, it represents a sense of the individual power that comes with the potential to commit violence.

A very good read for any reader S.E. Hinton’s, The Outsiders is a great book for elder kids and young teens to read. I recommend the book for 11 years and up. The story focuses around Ponyboy, his brothers, and their gang. There is also some violent parts to the books, such as a murder, a rumble, and a suicide by cop.

Outsiders, a new series which tells the story of a secret clan in the Appalachians and the battle to keep their land, premieres this week on WGN. Creator Peter Mattei says his inspiration for the new series came from an odd place: Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood.

Typically, The Giver is read at a middle-school level; however, I teach at a high school where the majority of students read below grade. I have done The Giver at the 9th grade level, and I have a fellow teacher that did it at the 10th grade level.

But there are a few age-related guidelines to take into consideration: From a technical standpoint, Harry Potter is categorized as a middle-grade read, which typically encompasses 9–to–12-year-olds.
