Switching to Red Stop Signs Although red lights were used for traffic lights to mean “stop,” yellow remained the standard color for stop signs until 1954. That was the year MUTCD mandated that stop signs shift to red backgrounds with white lettering after sign manufacturers had developed red fade-resistant signs.

They came up with traffic signals. They deemed red would mean stop because red was already widely used to signal, “Danger.” They decided a clear, unfiltered white light would mean go. That’s the way it was for about 100 years, until 1914. One night a red filter fell off a light making it visibly white.

But yield signs are red on the outside and white in the middle (with the word “YIELD” written in red). In fact, while yield signs were originally yellow when they were introduced in the United States in 1954, they were changed to red over 30 years ago. And many “clip arts” of yield signs still use the yellow color.

Attempting to design a unique sign to prevent uncertainty, the AASHO devised a unique octagonal shape that would alert drivers to stop. In 1924 the stop sign was changed to black on yellow by the National Conference on Street and Highway Safety (NCSHS), which was the prevailing color until 1954.
