One of the lessons to learn from reading the novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo is that of not judging by appearances. Quasimodo has been abandoned by his mother just because he has been born in an ugly twisted body – but that says nothing about his heart or his soul.

The novel, Hunchback of Notre Dame, written by Victor Hugo and published in 1831 is a story of a hunchback’s, Quassimodo, struggles through the society’s indifference to him. The culture reflected in the story is that of the European history during the 14th and 15th century under Louis XI.

Among the most treasured artifacts that were saved include the Holy Crown of Thorns, a wreath of thorns believed to have been placed on Jesus Christ’s head during his crucifixion, and the tunic of St. Louis, believed to have belonged to Louis IX, who was king of France from 1226-1270.

Most of the wood/metal roof and the spire of the cathedral was destroyed, with about one third of the roof remaining. The remnants of the roof and spire fell atop the stone vault underneath, which forms the ceiling of the cathedral’s interior.

Viollet-le-Duc was a Gothic Revival architect who was famous for his own creative restorations, introducing the gargoyles, which served as rain spouts from the roof and appeared to have survived the fire. Viollet-le-Duc restored the facade of Notre-Dame, inside and out, including replacing 60 statues.

Most people don’t realize that the current renovation is actually just one in a long list of rebuilds and reconstruction that Notre Dame has undergone since its resurrection. Notre Dame has been rebuilt and refigured over ten times throughout the years.
