Charles Dickens wrote A Tale of Two Cities as a warning to the ruling powers of England. The message was that the French Revolution was caused by social inequality and serious unrest. At the time the book was written, it was already historical fiction.

The Carmagnole was important in the story because it signified the strength and resolve of the French Revolution and its impact to those in its opposition. The aristocracy had fallen and the citizens had taken over, it was a dangerous time for the former ruling class (which Lucie’s husband was connected to).

A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, deals with the major themes of duality, revolution, and resurrection. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times in London and Paris, as economic and political unrest lead to the American and French Revolutions.

The next day, Carton enters the cell at one o’clock in the afternoon and exchanges clothes with him. Then, while Carton dictates a letter to Darnay, Carton drugs him so that he loses consciousness. Two guards, who believe that Darnay is Carton and that Carton is Darnay, then carry Darnay out of the prison.

Charles Darnay is a young Frenchman who, of course, lived during the French Revolution in the Charles Dickens novel A Tale of Two Cities. When we meet Darnay, he is in court, accused of being a spy.

Born a French nobleman, he decides to be the one aristocrat in France who has a conscience. He leaves his land (and his inheritance) in the dust, sets up shop as a lowly French tutor in London, and begins life over as Charles Darnay.

Bidding Lucie farewell, Sydney rushes out the door. Lucie, who loves Charles, marries him. They have two children, a girl and a boy. The boy dies as a child.

A Tale of Two Cities is structured around a central conflict between Charles Darnay’s desire to break free of his family legacy, and Madame Defarge’s desire to hold him accountable for the violent actions of his father and uncle.

Sydney Carton is a central character in Charles Dickens’ 1859 novel A Tale of Two Cities.

In A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens develops the symbol of water to represent the frustration of the French people. Dickens also uses water to represent how the French people feel towards their situation.

Defarge symbolises several themes. She represents one aspect of the Fates. The Moirai (the Fates as represented in Greek mythology) used yarn to measure out the life of a man, and cut it to end it; Defarge knits, and her knitting secretly encodes the names of people to be killed.

Miss Pross is a character in Charles Dickens’ 1859 novel A Tale of Two Cities. Miss Pross leaves Madame Defarge’s body there and escapes with Jerry Cruncher, but the psychological shock and the sound of the gun cause her to go deaf.

Dr. Manette is resurrected, or ”recalled to life,” when he is rescued after 18 years in prison and brought back to his old life through the love of his daughter, Lucie. Sydney Carton experiences a spiritual resurrection through his self-sacrificing death, which redeems his wasted life and saves Darnay and his family.
