6 INLAND LAKES Surrounded by massive mountains, the lake itself sits at an altitude of approximately 669 meters (2,200 feet) above sea level. The Tepemechín River drains the lake on the south and the Blanco River empties the lake on the north.

The main sources of water in Central Asia are the Syr Darya and Amu Darya Rivers, mostly fed by snow- and glacier-melt from the Pamir, Hindu Kush and Tien Shan mountain ranges.

The five main river basins in Central Asia are formed by the Amu Darya, Syr Darya, Balkhash-Alakol, Ob-Irtysh, and Ural rivers (Figure 1). Before a large part of the Aral Sea dried up, the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers used to flow into it.

The two main rivers of Central Asia are the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya. The rivers are very important to the Central Asian countries as the region remains quite dry for most of the year. 60% of Central Asia is deserted.

Central Asia has the largest reserves of zinc, lead, and chromite. Also, a country called “Kazakhstan” is in the top ten for supplies of copper, iron, gold, and manganese. A country called Turkmenistan also is rich in natural gas, having about 5% of all the world’s natural gas.

The human occupation of Central Asia dates back to the late Pleistocene Epoch, approximately 25,000 to 35,000 years ago, but the first identifiable human groups to live there were the Cimmerians and Scythians (1st millennium bce) in the west and the Hsiung-nu people (from 200 bce) in the east.

As of 2021, there are nearly 383 million Christians in Asia.
