Intercardinal directions Southeast (SE), 135°, halfway between south and east, is the opposite of northwest. Southwest (SW), 225°, halfway between south and west, is the opposite of northeast. Northwest (NW), 315°, halfway between north and west, is the opposite of southeast.

Point the hour hand (the little one) at the sun. Imagine there is a line down the middle of the angle between the hour hand and the 12 o clock mark. The line down the middle of the angle is pointing South; so the opposite direction is North.

To use your watch as an approximate compass outside of the tropics in the northern hemisphere, hold the watch horizontal and point the hour hand at the sun. Half way between that point and the twelve o’clock mark on your watch points to the south.

Lay the watch flat and face-up in your palm so that its face is parallel with the ground. Point the hour hand in the direction of the sun. Turn the watch, your hand, or your entire body so that the hour hand of your watch is pointing directly at the sun. The time on the watch doesn’t matter, as long as it’s accurate.

On sports watches, it often has calibrated markings and the ability to rotate in either one or two directions. Although rotating watch bezels perform timekeeping functions, the primary purpose of the bezel is to hold the crystal covering the face of the watch in place.

The compass will help orient you to the north so you can find the Big Dipper. For telling time in the day, you’ll need to line the compass up with a sun clock, which you can print out online. Go out every hour throughout the day and mark the position of the shadow. Then you can use your marks to help you tell time!

5 Tricks to Tell the Time Without Using a Watch or Clock

1. Use your fingers to calculate remaining sunlight.
2. Tell the time by tracking the sun’s position.

5. Use your body clock to tell the time.

1 Drive a stick into the ground and periodically mark the tip of the shadow cast by the stick. The shadow will shrink towards midday and lengthen again after midday, so this will tell you roughly when noon (12pm) is.

The sun always rises in the east and sets in the west, therefore you can tell what the time is just by looking at the sun’s location in the sky. If the Sun is about 45 degrees up from the horizon in the east the time should be around 9:00am. When the sun is directly above your head that means its noon.

You need to measure how many fingers can fit between the horizon and the bottom of the sun. Four fingers equals one hour, with each finger representing 15 minutes. If there is more space than one hand, line up your other hand on top of the first one and count accordingly.

5 tips for telling the time properly in English

1. Choose which clock to use.
2. Only use o’clock up to 12.
3. We only have a ‘half past, never a ‘half to’.
4. Use ‘quarter’ for 15 minutes before or after the hour.
5. Use ‘at’ for specific times and ‘in’ for periods of time.

A clock has numbers and hands. The long hand is called the minute hand. The short hand is called the hour hand. The long hand is pointing to the 12.

There are two ways of telling the time in English – the 12-hour clock and the 24-hour clock. In the 24-hour clock, we use the numbers from 0 – 23 to indicate the hours.

We only say “o’clock” at the exact hour. For example, “It’s four o’clock” (4:00). Or “It’s eight o’clock” (8:00).
