What are the blank pages in a book called? The blank page in the front is called the flyleaf. Blank pages at the end of a book are called endpapers.
The front or face of a single sheet of paper, or the right-hand page of an open book is called the recto. The back or underside of a single sheet of paper, or the left-hand page of an open book is known as the verso.
It is important to get your pages on the proper side of the page for book formatting purposes. The actual number of pages in the book should end on an even number. Left side pages should be even numbered and right side pages should be odd numbered.
Page numbering Page 1 and all odd-numbered pages are always right-hand pages. Page 2 and all even-numbered pages are always left-hand pages.
1 Answer. It’s recommended to start new chapters on the recto page of a manuscript, as it establishes a predictable flow for the reader to follow. The resulting occasional blank pages are actually a part of establishing this rhythm, making the divisions between chapters even more distinct.
For magazines, the first recto after the cover is usually page 1; newspapers, the front page is page 1; other publications, “it depends.” Academic publications and professional journals usually have very specific style guides that you would follow.
Normally, the first page, or cover page, of a document does not have a page number or other header or footer text. You can avoid putting a page number on the first page using sections, but there is an easier way to do this. To change the page number on the second page to one, click the Insert tab.
In more formal texts, such as theses and dissertations, it is common that the page numbering first starts with the introduction or background. Thus, the page numbering is excluded on the title, abstract and table of contents page.
When you get books and booklets printed online, always count the cover pages – even if they’re blank. In our bulleted example, notice that we counted the front cover as two pages (front & back), and we counted the back as two pages (front & back).
A book page is each side of a sheet of paper. Front matter (the title page, copyright page, etc.) is often numbered with roman numerals, and it’s common for even the most experienced publisher to forget to include these pages in their final page count.
