Starting from Windows XP, Microsoft required Windows to be activated in order to use all features. Here is a video showing what actually happens when the Windows activation period expires from Windows XP up to Windows 11.

Note that Windows XP to 7 has a 14 or 30 day activation countdown after install, while Windows 8 onwards begins immediately.
