Camille Claudel died on 19 October 1943, after having lived 30 years in the asylum. In September 1943 her brother Paul had been informed of his sister’s terminal illness and with some difficulty he crossed Occupied France to see her but was neither present at her death nor at her funeral.

François Auguste René Rodin (12 November 1840 – 17 November 1917) was a French sculptor generally considered the founder of modern sculpture. He was schooled traditionally and took a craftsman-like approach to his work. Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, and deeply pocketed surface in clay.

A sculpture by Auguste Rodin has sold for a record $20.4m (£14m) at an auction of impressionist and modern art in the US.

The Thinker (French: Le Penseur) is a bronze sculpture by Auguste Rodin, usually placed on a stone pedestal. The work shows a nude male figure of heroic size sitting on a rock resting on his chin on one hand as though deep in thought, often used as an image to represent philosophy.

Rodin’s Thinker exists today in many casts and sizes. More than fifty are known in this size—which is the size of Rodin’s original handmade clay model.

Granite is the hardest carving stone. Instead of carving with a hammer and chisel, you must use a carbide-tipped tools, diamond saws and grinders. Granite can have a very fine grain or a very course one. Many gravestones are carved from granite.

Choose either a standard circular saw or a wet-cut circular saw to cut granite. Either will work, but the wet-cut circular saw will produce very little dust, thanks to a small tube that drizzles water onto the surface of the granite as you cut. Cut granite slab outdoors if possible to simplify cleanup.
