TPCASTT is an acronym standing for title, paraphrase, connotation, attitude, shift, title (again), and theme.

Scansion is how you analyze the meter of poetry based on the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in each line.

Directions

Paraphrasing involves taking a passage — either spoken or written — and rewording it. When paraphrasing, it is important to keep the original meaning so that the facts remain intact. Basically, you are writing something in your own words that still expresses the original idea.

In “The World Is Too Much With Us,” the speaker describes humankind’s relationship with the natural world in terms of loss. That relationship once flourished, but now, due to the impacts of industrialization on everyday life, humankind has lost the ability to appreciate, celebrate, and be soothed by nature.

Major Themes: The major themes of the poem are the loss of nature and the natural world and the impacts of the busy life. The poet argues that people have forsaken their souls for material gains. In fact, the whole text of the poem denounces materialism which the poet has seen around him.

Similarly, Proteus and Triton are the names of two gods who are closely associated with the myth of nature. In the middle part of the poem, the phrase “Great God” has been capitalized. It means the speaker feels helpless in the human world and he desires to be supported by the god.

“The World Is Too Much with Us” is a sonnet by the English Romantic poet William Wordsworth. In it, Wordsworth criticises the world of the First Industrial Revolution for being absorbed in materialism and distancing itself from nature. Composed circa 1802, the poem was first published in Poems, in Two Volumes (1807).

The verse “This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon”, gives the vision of a woman exposed to the heavens. The phrase “sleeping flowers” might also describe how nature is being overrun unknowingly and is helpless. The change Wordsworth is hoping for will come in the form of a mighty revolt by nature.

Wordsworth is talking about how the wind sounds: he says it howls. Wordsworth is saying in this sonnet that modern humans are out of “tune” with nature. We feel alienated from the natural world. That is because we spend too much time apart from it, focused on earning and spending money.

When Wordsworth notes that “we are out of tune,” he means that we are no longer able to appreciate that our true goal should be to appreciate Nature. The poem’s initial sentence–“The world is too much with us; late and soon,/Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers”–sets up the larger argument of the poem.

Dreams figure prominently in Hughes’s poems. In Hughes’s poems about America, he regularly implies that due to racism and inequality, the dreams of an entire people have been deferred. Hughes believes that someday, African Americans can reach out and claim their latent dreams.
