In the very first draft notes, Bilbo hid in a hole and stabbed Smaug as he passed over. He wrote in a plot arc about how Bilbo was supposed to steal the Arkenstone in particular, apparently to use it as some kind of Bat-signal to summon the rest of the Dwarves to kill Smaug.

He knew that they had a hidden sense of cunning and cleverness. Hobbits also get along with other races quite well, as they are free of prejudices. This is why he chose Bilbo as a burglar and also why he had faith in Frodo and Sam, as he knew that only a hobbit had the inner strength to bear the ring.

Gandalf’s most important role in The Hobbit is as a tutelary or wisdom figure to Bilbo. The very last scene depicts Gandalf and Balin visiting Bilbo some time later in his hobbit-hole. Gandalf is represented in all his wisdom, reminding Bilbo of his place in the grand scheme of things.

Bilbo puts on the ring to become invisible then he sings insulting songs to taunt and infuriate the spiders. He also stamps and throws stones at the spiders.

In The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug, Bilbo can understand the spiders when he wears the ring because, all spiders in middle earth come from Ungoliant, an ancient evil in the shape of a spider who allied with Saurons master. Thanks! Ring was close enough to Bilbo to still transfer some of its powers to him.

In The Hobbit, Bilbo called the spiders Attercop, Lazy Lob, Crazy Cob, and Old Tomnoddy.

The spiders then apparently left because Radagast would have been able to fight them off or something like that. The spell Radagast uses to drive away the spiders is very powerful magic that was used to combat the spiders whilst also curing Sebastian.
