By the end of the book, Jack has given in completely to his savage nature, overseeing the violent murder of Simon, the torture of Wilfred, and the killing of Piggy.

During the assembly Jack fully abandons the rules and codes of society. He promotes anarchy among the boys, leading them on a disorganized hunt for an imaginary beast. Having been unable to kill a piglet earlier, at one point Jack displays his viciousness in the killing of a pig.

As Ralph and Jack argue, each boy tries to give voice to his basic conception of human purpose: Ralph advocates building huts, while Jack champions hunting. Jack, drawn to the exhilaration of hunting by his bloodlust and desire for power, has no interest in building huts and no concern for what Ralph thinks.

Jack and the other biguns want to stay and play at the fort, but Ralph says they have to go search the mountain for the beast and relight the signal fire. The other boys want to “have fun,” Ralph wants to rebuild civilization in the form of the signal fire.

What was Ralph dreaming of before the twins woke him up? He was dreaming about feeding a pony sugar, and how it was almost time for tea…

Civilized and savage blame each other for the subconscious fear they both feel: that the beast lies within them. Ralph accuses Jack of breaking the rules. Jack questions Ralph’s leadership. He says he doesn’t care about the rules, that he’ll hunt the beast and kill it.

Osgar fought back, using his magic to throw the knights into a tree, though not before Gwaine pierced him with his sword. The wound proved to be a fatal one, the sorcerer dying moments later, and Gwaine’s injuries were treated by Merlin back at camp.
