Quantitative research is “explaining phenomena by collecting numerical data that are analysed using mathematically based methods (in particular statistics).”* Qualitative research seeks to answer questions about why and how people behave in the way that they do. It provides in-depth information about human behaviour.

What is the difference between quantitative and qualitative data? Quantitative data can be counted, measured, and expressed using numbers. Qualitative data is descriptive and conceptual. Qualitative data can be categorized based on traits and characteristics.

Qualitative research design varies depending upon the method used; participant observations, in-depth interviews (face-to-face or on the telephone), and focus groups are all examples of methodologies which may be considered during qualitative research design.

In contrast to quantitative studies, which are about breadth, qualitative research focuses on depth. Qualitative research focuses on life experiences; they are more about the “why” and “how” rather than the “how many”, or “how often”. Qualitative study designs might be chosen for any number of reasons.
