Syllables: vowel and consonant patterns Look at the vcv pattern in this word: After a short vowel sound you usually need two consonants before the next vowel. VCV simply means vowel-consonant-vowel. It’s a pattern we find in many two-syllable words. The first syllable is closed when first the first vowel is sandwiched between two consonants. If this were an open syllable word, it would sound like cay-bin.

The simplest and most straight forward type of syllable division pattern is VCCV. When there are two consonants between the vowels, the syllable break falls in the middle. This is how we divide words such as cac/tus, cup/cake, rab/bit, bet/ter, and ex/cuse.

Here’s the procedure:

1. Look at the word. Circle the vowel sounds with red.
2. Underline the consonants BETWEEN the vowels (don’t worry about the other consonants).
3. Determine which syllable division rule (VC/CV, V/CV, VC/V, or V/V) applies.
4. Cut or mark the word accordingly.
5. Read the word.

Examples include cap, sit, and up. It’s called a closed syllable because the vowel is “closed in” by a consonant. In closed syllables, the vowel usually says its short sound. More than one consonant can be used to close in a syllable, as in dish and stretch.

2-syllable heteronyms Some words, called heteronyms, have a single spelling, but two different pronunciations. There are a number of 2-syllable words that are stressed on the first syllable when the word is being used as a noun or adjective, and stressed on the the second syllable when it is being used as a verb.

A closed syllable has a short vowel ending in a consonant. Examples include hat, dish, bas/ket.

Happy (HAP – py) The first syllable (HAP) is stressed. The second syllable (py) is not stressed. You say HAPpy.

The word <king> is an example of a closed syllable, which often makes the vowel sound short.

Closed Syllables in Multisyllable Words Since the “a” is closed in or trapped, it makes the short sound of /a/ like apple. We pronounce this syllable as /f/ /a/ /n/. In the second syllable, “tas,” the consonant s is trapping or closing in the vowel “a.” This means the a can only say it’s short sound of /a/ like apple.

An open syllable occurs when a vowel is at the end of the syllable, resulting in the long vowel sound, e.g. pa/per, e/ven, o/pen, go & we. Open syllable words are open because they are not closed by a consonant….Open Syllable.

An open syllable is when there is no consonant after the vowel. The vowel is not closed in by a consonant. Examples: ,A, me, he, baby An open syllable makes a vowel say its name or is pronounced long….open syllables.

1 syllable

The vowel in an open syllable is long. We treat all “VCV” words as “Tiger” words. If this produces an unrecognizable word, we close the first syllable by dividing after the consonant.
