In biology, a non-living thing means any form without life, such as an inanimate body or object. Examples of non-living things are rocks, water, and air.

A non-living thing is anything that was never alive. In order for something to be classified as living, it must grow and develop, use energy, reproduce, be made of cells, respond to its environment, and adapt.

The earth in which we live is made up of several things. These “things” can be categorized into two different types – Living and Non-living Things. All living things breathe, eat, grow, move, reproduce and have senses. Non-living things do not eat, grow, breathe, move and reproduce. They do not have senses.

Non-living things are inanimate objects or forces with the ability to influence, shape, alter a habitat, and impact its life. Some examples of non-living things include rocks, water, weather, climate, and natural events such as rockfalls or earthquakes.

For young students things are ‘living’ if they move or grow; for example, the sun, wind, clouds and lightning are considered living because they change and move. Others think plants and certain animals are non-living.

There are three groups of nonliving things. They are solids, liquids, and gases.

All living organisms share several key characteristics or functions: order, sensitivity or response to the environment, reproduction, adaptation, growth and development, homeostasis, energy processing, and evolution.

Examples are plants (like grass, flowers, and trees) and animals (like birds, insects, and humans). Examples include a dead tree limb or a dead insect on the ground. A nonliving thing does not move, grow or change over time by itself. It does not require food, water or air because it is not alive.

The unified cell theory states that: all living things are composed of one or more cells; the cell is the basic unit of life; and new cells arise from existing cells. The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in living things. All organisms are made up of one or more cells.

Non-living things are not born. They do not grow, reproduce, grow old or die. Non-living things can be natural or man-made. Life processes. Living things carry out three main life processes.

Currently, living things are classified into three Domains: (Eu)Bacteria (true bacteria), Archaea (archaebacteria), and Eucarya (eukaryotes).

A Log is part of a tree and trees are living things. Since a log was part of an alive tree it is scientifically classified as a living thing.

Wood that has been separated from a tree is considered dead because it is removed from the source of nutrients, much in the same way as meat from a butcher’s shop is considered dead because the meat is not receiving nutrients from the animal because it is dead.

Fire can spread quickly and burn. The reason fire is non-living is because it does not have the eight characteristics of life. Also, fire is not made of cells. All living organisms is made of cells.

The main cause of funny shaped potatoes is some type of environmental stress while the tubers are developing.

Over several years, Scientists have been trying to prove whether potatoes have feelings and the answer is yes, they do. They have said that if you cut an uncooked potato in half and hold a stethoscope up to the flesh, you can in fact hear it make a high pitches squealing sound.

And since plants especially bananas don’t have any, they are not capable of emotions or feelings.
