Latitude lines are geographical coordinates that are used to specify the north and south sides of the Earth. Lines of constant latitude, also called parallels run from east to west in circles parallel to the equator. They run perpendicular to the lines of longitude, which run from the north to the south.
The five major circles of latitude are, starting from the North Pole and finishing at the South Pole; the Arctic Circle, the Tropic of Cancer, the Equator, the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle.
The International Date Line, shown here as a yellow line, defines the boundary between calendar dates. The International Date Line, established in 1884, passes through the mid-Pacific Ocean and roughly follows a 180 degrees longitude north-south line on the Earth.
