A bear’s eyes will glow fiery orange. Night eyeshine is not only exhibited by some of the mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Wolf spiders have star-like glittering white eyeshine. Many moths exhibit an orange-red glow to their eyes.

The eyes of the fox are also very intensive at night. They typically keep to themselves at night when they hunt. But if you do encounter them you should look for green (or yellow) eyes in the dark. This fox has a mix of green and white eyes as he stares at you.

Red fox eyes are more akin to cat’s eyes with a perpendicular pupil and a red glow. Foxes can be recognized apart from other canines based on their pupil and their angled oval shape, which is a sharp contrast to the rounder curved oval eye shape of dogs.

White eyeshine occurs in many fish, especially walleye; blue eyeshine occurs in many mammals such as horses; yellow eyeshine occurs in mammals such as cats, dogs, and raccoons; and red eyeshine occurs in rodents, opossums and birds. The human eye has no tapetum lucidum, hence no eyeshine.

A large number of animals have the tapetum lucidum, including deer, dogs, cats, cattle, horses and ferrets. Humans don’t, and neither do some other primates. Squirrels, kangaroos and pigs don’t have the tapeta, either.

Wolves eye colors range from amber to pale yellow and even green. Blue eyes and dark brown/black eyes are a dog trait.

Those with glowing red eyes are almost without exception thoroughly evil or, at least, very dangerous. For those who are not evil, red eyes can serve as a marker for their Elemental Powers, typically fire.

In darker rooms, the pupils of the eye are already widened to bring in enough light to see. In these instances, the flash from the camera can result in redness, as the pupil is unable to constrict before the photo is captured.

The bottom line. Eyes that sparkle are often a sign of health and vitality. If your eyes look tired, red, irritated, or puffy, they’re likely not going to have much of a glimmer.
