Frankenstein originates from the 1818 novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelly. Although not actually a doctor in the novel (he is a university student studying Natural Sciences) later depictions show him as a doctor.

Use by Mary Shelley Erasmus Darwin’s name is to be found in the first sentence of the Preface to Frankenstein as an authority who thinks that the central event of the story – Victor Frankenstein’s animation of his creature – is ‘of not impossible occurrence’.

Caroline Beaufort – The daughter of Beaufort. After her father’s death, Caroline is taken in by, and later marries, Alphonse Frankenstein. She dies of scarlet fever, which she contracts from Elizabeth, just before Victor leaves for Ingolstadt at age seventeen.

Beaufort was a very close friend of Alphonse’s who fell into poverty, paid off his debts, and, out of pride, moved towns with his daughter, Caroline. Alphonse wanted to help Beaufort “begin the world again,” but by the time Alphonse was able to find Beaufort, Beaufort’s health had declined (18).
