Not only are there many different aspect ratios to use for film, there are also different ways of labeling them. The common ones are 16:9 (also 1.78:1), 21:9 (also 2.35:1), and 4:3 (also 1.33:1), and a brief history of each is shown in this video to help you better understand times when it may be appropriate to use each of them.
