Creating named ranges can simplify how you refer to cells when writing formulas, creating charts and Conditional Formatting rules.

Typically named ranges use absolute references, because a named area is assumed to be a fixed area of a sheet.

Being able to name your own calculations I think is a strong example of using different reference techniques when defining names.
