we are proud to present our USB power surge testing device the USB KILL 2.0 .

In 2015 a video on youtube showcased a usb key able to generate a power surge thru USB ports damaging permanently the host. the USB KILLER.

We were surprised at how expensive hardware succumbed to such a unsophisticated attack, and wanted to build the device to test how vulnerable consumer and enterprise level hardware was.

We decided to produce this device in order to test the security of the usb ports against such attacks.

The USB Kill simply collects voltage from the USB port power lines (5V, 1 – 3A), stores it until it reaches ~ -240V, and then discharges this into the USB data lines. This charge / discharge cycle is very rapid, and happens multiple times per second. The process of rapid discharging will continue while the device is plugged in, or the device can no longer discharge – that is, the circuit in the host machine is broken somehow.

We ran our tests, and found that almost everything was vulnerable. Televisions, computers, servers, mobile phones, in-flight entertainment systems: anything with a USB port – there was a 95% chance that it was vulnerable

Any public facing USB port should be considered an attack vector. In data security, these ports are often locked down to prevent exfiltration of data, or infiltration of malware, but are very often unprotected against electrical attack. Hardware designers of public machines: photo booths, copy machines, airline entertainment systems, ticket terminals, etc – with exposed USB ports should ensure that their systems resist electrical attacks via the USB port. Likewise, hardware designers of private machines: cellphones, laptops, televisions, portable devices – should protect their devices against malicious attacks.

almost all consumer-level hardware fails when tested against the USB Kill. And we believe that companies should worry and test the effects of a USB power surge attack on their devices to evaluate the consequences and FIX this problem permanently !
