Tor—also known as The Onion Router—is a great tool for anonymous browsing. The good news is you don’t have to choose between Tor and a VPN for full anonymity online.

First up: Tor explained. Tor encrypts your data and sends it through a layer of anonymous nodes. No-one can see your data at any point, resulting in almost perfect privacy. However, there are gaps in the system that could leave you vulnerable. That’s why when people ask me how to use Tor, I always recommend using it with a VPN.

There are two ways to do this: VPN over Tor, and Tor over VPN. VPN over Tor means connecting to Tor and then connecting to the VPN. This usually involves manual configuration, and means anyone spying on you can see that you’re using Tor. I generally prefer using Tor over VPN, which means connecting to a VPN, and then accessing Tor.

I think the best VPN for Tor is ExpressVPN. Its connect quickly and has an ironclad no-logs policy.
