Tesla’s new Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Reluctance Motor represents a significant leap in electric vehicle technology, especially when compared to the traditional induction motor used in earlier Tesla models. One of the key improvements is higher efficiency, which directly translates to better energy use, increased range, and improved overall vehicle performance.
The induction motor, which Tesla first introduced in the Model S and Model X, operates by inducing a magnetic field in the rotor without permanent magnets. While reliable, this design leads to higher energy losses due to electrical resistance and heat generation. Induction motors typically achieve an efficiency of around 93%, meaning a portion of the battery’s energy is lost as heat.
In contrast, the Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Reluctance Motor, first integrated into the Model 3, achieves 97% efficiency, reducing energy waste and improving vehicle range.
