It’s time to sliiiiiiiide into our countdown of the Top 10 Songs of 1988.
Coming in at #10… it’s INXS with “Need You Tonight.” For the Kick album, INXS decided to shake things up—Michael Hutchence and Andrew “Andy” Farriss took on all the songwriting themselves. /”Need You Tonight/” actually came together in a pretty wild way. Andy was in a rush to catch a flight, but just before heading out, inspiration struck. He whipped up the rhythm track on a Roland 707 drum machine right then and there. The problem?

“Need You Tonight” defied record label wisdom and ran to #1 on on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also a #3 smash in Australia, and New Zealand, and #2 in UK and Canada.
Next up at #9 on our countdown of the Top 10 Songs of 1988 it’s “When It’s Love,” the 2nd single released from the Van Halen album OU812 with Sammy Hagar as the lead vocalist & lyricist.
“When It’s Love” is a rare power ballad for the mighty Van Halen, or for the Red Rocker for that matter. Here’s what Sammy told me about the making of the song: “When It’s Love” crept to #23 in Australia, #28 in the UK, and to much greater heights in America where it landed at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Next up is the soulful elegance of one of the most under appreciated singers of the 80s.. It’s Anita Baker and the title track from her 2nd album, “Giving You the Best that I Got” at #8.
/”Giving You the Best That I Got/” is all about unconditional love and devotion, but that wasn’t the song’s original intent. According to co-writer Randy Holland, it actually started as a personal anthem about his struggles. After moving from Bartlesville, Oklahoma, to Los Angeles to chase a music career, he found himself hitting roadblocks. He was, quite literally, giving it the best that he got, but things…
