Student Safety and Well-Being NSLI-Y programs are structured to promote the safety and well-being of participants to the extent possible, however, students and families need to be aware that there is inherent risk in study abroad and overseas travel.

Q. Is NSLI-y prestigious?

NSLI-Y is a prestigious and selective U.S. Department of State overseas immersion program for American youth. NSLI-Y aims to provide a tangible incentive for the learning and use of foreign language, which is increasingly important in our interconnected world.

Q. What is NSLI looking for?

NSLI-Y seeks applicants who represent the diversity of the United States. Students of all racial, national origins, religious, gender identities and expression, sexual orientations, disabilities, and socio-economic backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Previous language study is not required.

Q. How long is NSLI-Y summer program?

Summer programs last six to seven weeks and typically start in mid-June to early July and end in early to mid-August. Program dates will be specified at the time of finalist notifications (March-April). All students will be enrolled in language classes and receive at least 120 hours of classroom language instruction.

The goal of NSLI-Y is to improve critical language skills among American youth and to spark a lifetime of interest in language learning.
