In this Excel Function Explained video series, I will explain, how to use MONTH function in excel. Excel MONTH function extracts months from either from serial number or from the date provided by you. Suppose you have a date in cell A1 with a date 31/7/2020 now if you use the month function it will return 7. This function works either with date or serial number.

Now what is serial number in date in excel?

Excel starts counting date from 1900 and it counts date based on serial number. Let’s say we have 1/1/1900. This is the first date according to excel and it has a serial number 1. From that day excel add 1 to every passed date. Now if you write 7/1/1900 that will have a serial number 7. Because it is the seventh day so the serial number 2000 means 2000 day from 1/1/1900. This is how serial number in date works in excel.
Let’s learn how to use MONTH formula in excel.

The Function looks like this =Month (Serial Number)

The Month function has only one argument or parameter.

1. Serial Number: In this parameter we need to write date or serial number from which excel will extract month.

This is how we use MONTH in excel. Remember, using MONTH function in excel you actually tell excel formula to format and extract Month from a serial number or date inside a data range you specify.
