Stopping apps from running in the background in Windows can help improve system performance and save on system resources. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to do this:

Method 1 Using Task Manager

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard or Ctrl + Alt + Delete and then select /”Task Manager/” from the menu that appears. You can also right-click on the taskbar and choose /”Task Manager/” from there.

In the Task Manager window, you will see a list of running processes and applications. These are categorized under the /”Processes/” or /”Applications/” tab, depending on your Windows version.

To see a list of background processes, click on the /”Processes/” tab. Here, you’ll find a list of all the processes currently running on your system.

Locate the app or program you want to stop from running in the background. You can sort the list by name, CPU usage, or memory usage to help find the specific app.

Select the app by clicking on it to highlight it.

Click the /”End Task/” button in the lower right corner of the Task Manager window. This will terminate the selected app’s background process.

Windows will attempt to close the app. If it’s not responding or doesn’t close properly, you may see a warning. In that case, choose to forcefully close the app.

Method 2: Using Settings Windows 10 and 11

Open the Settings: Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.

Go to Privacy Windows 10 or Privacy & Security for Windows 11: In Windows 10, select /”Privacy,/” and in Windows 11, select /”Privacy and Security./”

Click on Background apps: In Windows 10, it’s found on the left sidebar. In Windows 11, scroll down to find it under the /”App permissions/” section.

Toggle Off Background Apps: You’ll see a list of apps with toggle switches next to them. Turn off the toggle switch for each app you want to prevent from running in the background.

Close the Settings app, and the changes will take effect immediately.

Method 3: Using Group Policy on Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise

This method is for Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise users and involves using the Group Policy Editor:

Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.

Type /”gpedit.msc/” and press Enter to open the Group Policy Editor.

In the left pane, navigate to Computer Configuration then Administrative Templates then System then Group Policy.

In the right pane, find and double-click on /”Turn off background applications/”.

Select the /”Enabled/” option to disable background applications.

Click /”Apply/” and then /”OK/” to save the changes.

Restart your computer for the policy to take effect.

These methods should help you stop apps from running in the background on your Windows system, whether you prefer using Task Manager, the Settings app, or Group Policy, depending on your Windows version and edition
