MAKING GOOGLE DOCS READ ALOUD
Well, making Google Docs read text aloud for us takes a chrome extension, so as the need to use Google Chrome browser. Overall it takes 2 steps – getting the extension out of the Web Store, and switching on the screen reader tools support in Docs.
ACCESSIBILITY FOR SCREEN READER
The first step is to turn on the screen reader support. We go to “Tools” on the toolbar on top, click it, and down to the last item, “Accessibility settings”. In the menu we check the box of the first item “Turn on screen reader support” and save it by pressing “OK” in the bottom right corner. Now for the step 2 we go to the chrome web store.
INSTALLING EXTENSION AND DEMONSTRATION
Chrome web store is located on chrome.google.com/webstore, there’s a link in the video description on top, or we just search in Google for “Chrome Webstore”, will find it instantly. We click on the first link and get to the store home page. Then we locate the extension search field and enter “Screen Reader”. Then on the new page we literally need the first one in the search results, “Screen Reader” offered by Google themselves, so we click on it, and on the extension’s page, on the right we locate and press on “Add to Chrome”, will ask for the permission to install, that we allow with the “Add extension” button, waiting a bit until it is installed, and once you see a pop-up, the extension in installed and ready to work. We go back to our document, there we highlight the part of the text that we need to be read aloud, going to the “accessibility” on the toolbar, dragging the mouse to “Speak” and selecting the “speak selection”. And of course there are more options in the accessibility menu that you can explore and find your comfortable way to work with the doc.
