After checking many on-line sources I finally figured out how to get the best quality from my cheap microphone. It was actually quite simple so I’ve made a short video to help anybody else in the same position.
Main points:
1. Plug in your USB microphone/headset BEFORE opening Audacity.
2. Go to EDIT, then PREFERENCES to make sure Audacity has selected the correct audio source i.e. your microphone.
3. Bring down the microphone input slider from 1.0 to about 0.6 or 0.7 depending on your voice levels.
4. Once finished recording you can use the small slider on your recording interface to bring the GAIN down slightly if your settings were a bit off and your voice still sounds scratchy.
Hope this helps!
