In this video we cover how to do, or calculate the square root of a number in excel. We go through how to use the built in function for square roots and how to create your own formula

Transcript/notes
There are 2 main ways to calculate the square root of a number or value in excel.

The first way is to use the built in square root function, and there are 2 ways we can use this. As an example, if we want the square root of the number 36 in cell A2. We are going to put the answer in cell B2, so we left click on cell B2, so it is highlighted. Next, we type in an equals sign, then we type in the letters sq, and a drop down box appears. In the box, we are going to left double click on the first option, sqrt.

Now, in our answer cell we have the sqrt, then an open parenthesis, this is asking us to put some information in here. From here, we are going to left click on the cell we want the square root of, in this case cell A2. Next, we type in a closed parenthesis, and then hit the enter key, and we have our answer of 6.

The second way to use the built in function, we again type in an equals sign, then sqrt, and this time we are going to type in an actual number or value, 36, here, then type in a closed parenthesis and then hit the enter key, and we have our answer of 6.

Now for the second way, which is to create our own formula, so to speak. Let’s say we want to know the square root of 144. In math, we can also write this as 144 raised to the 1 over 2, and that’s how we are going to enter it into excel.
Left click on the answer cell, in this case cell B3, so it is highlighted, then type in an equals sign.

Next, we type in 144, then we type in the to a power symbol, which is called a carrot symbol in excel, which is shift 6 on the keyboard. Then we type in an open parenthesis, then a 1, then a forward slash, which is the division symbol in excel. Next, we type in a 2, then a closed parenthesis. And we finish by hitting the enter key, and we have our answer of 12.
