Before starting, I’d like you to look at these excellent Tutorials on highlighting and formatting numbers in excel:

How to highlight all negative numbers in red: https://youtu.be/58DiGqTF59Y
How to highlight all cells with negative numbers: https://youtu.be/vcXpWY4GY0E

Now let’s follow the instructions to learn how to get parentheses for negative percentages in excel:
Step 1: Select the Data Range, where you have negative percentages.
Step 2: Right-click and select “Format Cells.”
Step 3: Select “Custom.” This is where you do custom formatting to your cells.
Step 4: Type: 0.00%;(0.00%)
Step 5: Click OK, and all the negative percentages are going to be displayed inside the parenthesis.
It is an excellent way to format negative percentages in excel. Though all the negative percentages are in brackets, you’ll be able to calculate it just fine. If you check the value, you can see the minus sign in the formula bar but not with the value in the cell. That means we didn’t change the value, but we formatted it and displayed minus to brackets.

Now, I’ll be using the Format cells option to format a range of negative percentages both in Red & Brackets. So, follow the steps below to display negative percentages in red and brackets in Microsoft Excel.
Step 1: Select the Data Range.
Step 2: Right-click and select “Format Cells.”
Step 3: Select “Custom.”
Step 4: Type: 0.00%;[Red](0.00%)
Step 5: Click OK, and all the negative percentages are going to be displayed inside the parenthesis, and the font color will be RED. This is how you can display negative percentages in red & within brackets in excel.

It is highly unlikely; you want to format negative percentages in red, within brackets along with the minus sign. Mostly if you Keep a value inside Brackets, it is considered as a negative value. The same goes for Red. Now, if you still want to display the minus sign along with red and parenthesis to your negative percentages, that is possible too. Follow the instructions below to format in such way in excel.
Step 1: Select the Data Range.
Step 2: Right-click and select “Format Cells.”
Step 3: Select “Custom.”
Step 4: Type: 0.00%;[Red](-0.00%)
Step 5: Click OK, and all the negative percentages are going to be displayed inside the parenthesis, and the font color will be RED, and there will be a minus sign inside the bracket also.

I have only used Custom formatting in this tutorial. The code used in the custom formatting is simple. The first part of the code (Before Semi-colon) resembles the positive percentages, and the second part of the code (After Semi-colon) resembles the negative percentages. You can add font color, brackets, minus sign or any symbol to percentages using this technique.
