The designer command is one of the new PowerPoint features (office 365 subscriptions) that makes creating professional backgrounds for your slides easy.

The feature works with text, up to six pictures, a table, or a chart.

The trick is using designer for inspiration to generate slide ideas. If you then find an idea that you like, you can breakout the background by using the paste special and Metafile breaking trick described in the tutorial to break out the background so you can add it to your slide master (creating a background for all the slides in your PowerPoint template).
