How To Convert Disk Partition Styles From MBR to GPT or GPT to MBR

In this video I will show you how to convert disk partition styles from Master Boot Record (MBR) to GUID Partition Table (GPT) or GPT to MBR.

Steps To Convert Disk Partition Styles From MBR to GPT or GPT to MBR:
1. Navigate to the bottom left hand corner of your task bar to the Windows Start icon and right click on it
2. Left click on Disk Management
3. Once the Disk Management app opens, you will be able to see all the disks you have activated on your computer and all their partitions. Before we start the process of converting disk partition styles we first need to find what partition style our disk is currently using. Right click on the Disk number that you would like to check the partition style for and click on /”Properties/”
4. Click on the /”Volumes/” tab
5. Look for /”Partition style/” to see your disks current partition style. Once you have checked its partition style close out of your disks properties
6. Next, we need to delete all the partitions on our disk that we would like to convert. To do this, right click on each partition and then left click on /”Delete volume/”
7. Left click on /”Yes/”
8. Repeat this process for each partition on the disk for conversion
9. Once all your disks volume has been unallocated, we can now proceed with the partition style conversion process. Right click on your disk and choose /”Convert to GPT Disk/” to convert to GPT or choose /”Convert to MBR Disk/” to convert to MBR/”
10. Next, we need to repartitioned the converted disks unallocated storage. To do this, right click on your converted disks unallocated storage and left click on /”New Simple Volume/”
11. Click Next
12. Enter a value for your new simple volume size in Megabytes (MB). Click Next
13. Assign a drive letter and click Next
14. Format this volume with the following settings: NTFS, Default and pick a custom Volume Label (drive name).
15. Checkmark /”Perform a quick format/” only if you have formatted your disk previously. If it is your first time to format your disk, uncheck this setting.
16. Leave /”Enable file and folder compression/” unchecked and click Next
17. Click Finish
18. Your disks converted partition style will now be activated and partitioned as a drive ready for use.

Congratulations, you have successfully changed your disks partition style.

Partition styles: GPT Vs MBR

Disks can be divided up into multiple chunks called partitions. Each partition – even if you have only one – has to have a partition style – GPT or MBR. Windows uses the partition style to understand how to access the data on the disk.

Most PCs use GPT disk type for hard drives and SSDs. GPT is more robust and allows for volumes bigger than 2 TB. The older MBR disk type is used by 32-bit PCs, older PCs, and removable drives such as memory cards.
